Navigating Amateur MX – Episode 10
During Episode #10, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Derek to discuss the intricate challenges of amateur motocross, focusing on topics like bike setup and innovation in technology. Derek shared how he recently reignited his passion for research and development after feeling stuck in routine work. With advancements in CNC machining and 3D printing, he’s been diving into exciting projects that push the boundaries of motocross equipment. One standout project he described was the creation of interchangeable 3D-printed cylinder head ports. This allows for rapid testing of different designs without committing to expensive and permanent modifications—an approach that could revolutionize how we think about development and experimentation in our sport.
We then shifted to the critical importance of understanding your bike’s baseline performance. I’ve seen many riders rush to send their suspension out for adjustments or spend money on aftermarket parts without fully exploring what the stock settings can do. Derek explained that simple adjustments like sag, fork height, and clicker settings can dramatically change how a bike feels and performs. I couldn’t agree more with his point that journaling after every ride is key. It’s how you track what works and what doesn’t, helping you fine-tune your setup for balance across various track conditions. We emphasized that the goal should be to optimize the bike for most of a track’s demands, even if that means sacrificing perfection in specific areas.
I also took the opportunity to connect these bike performance discussions to the rider’s physiology and preparation. Hydration, nutrition, and mental clarity are as critical as the technical aspects of motocross. A properly hydrated, well-nourished rider performs more consistently and avoids the pitfalls of fatigue, poor decision-making, and crashes. I always tell my riders to aim for 80–85% effort during a race. It’s not about going all-out; it’s about maintaining control, building consistency, and staying within your physical and mechanical limits. A great bike setup is meaningless if your body isn’t prepared to perform at its best.
Finally, we focused on the mindset and habits that lead to long-term success. We discussed how riders like Hayden Deegan thrive because they’ve mastered communication, understand their bike’s capabilities, and focus on continuous progress rather than chasing perfection. We also touched on the role of technology, from AI tools to tire testing, as a way to gain a competitive edge. My takeaway for listeners is this: success in motocross is about committing to the process. Whether it’s refining your bike’s setup, taking care of your physical health, or building mental resilience, the path to success is paved with consistent effort and a willingness to learn every step of the way.
